Experience Day: Wildlife - Studley Royal Deer Rut

Overview

Join Nikon School on location to learn how to photograph amazing images of the deer at Studley Royal Park in North Yorkshire. The park is home to Red, Fallow and Sika deer which provide great subjects to photograph amongst the ancient oak woodlands. October is the time for the annual Red Deer rut, when the magnificent Red Deer stags will be the main attraction for this photography experience.

Course Contents

This workshop has something for everyone from beginners to advanced photographers as we will cover camera settings, tips and techniques to help you get the best images from the day. We will start early in the morning to make the most of the light and atmosphere created by the Autumnal weather.

This VIP experience is limited to four delegates, allowing us more time to teach you the techniques needed to take great images.

As with all wildlife photography, the welfare and safety of the animals comes first, so we will be photographing at a respectful distance. Recommended lenses would be in the range 200mm to 400mm, although longer focal lengths such as 500 or 600mm can also be used to get great images.

The park is large so we may end up walking a fair distance to find and photograph the deer, please make sure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear. The ground can be very wet early in the morning, so waterproof boots or wellies are strongly advised.

We would suggest bringing snacks and drinks as the tea room at Studley Royal will not open until 10am and the deer are normally on the other side of the park to this location.

If you would like to borrow any Nikon cameras or NIKKOR lenses e-mail us at [email protected], with your requirements. Please give us at least 1-2 weeks to arrange loan equipment if we can.

On the day, we recommend parking at the Lakeside Car Park. To access this car park, go through the village of Studley Roger and drive through the gateway to the park (use the post code HG4 3AY for Sat Navs). Be aware that this entrance opens at 6am and is automatically protected by bollards. There is a parking charge currently £6 all day, although for National Trust members it is free.

Excellent Course, Bad Weather

Superb venue with lots of opportuntiy to get close to and photograph the deer. The weather was very poor, raining most of the time, which is something none of us can control, but on the plus side it was possible to get some realy atmospheric shots. Finished slight early due to the conditions but were able to make good use of the time with advice and questions and answers from Neil.
